Engineers SPEAK

Presentation and communication skills can propel an engineer from being technically excellent to being a innovator and thought leader in the field.

Skills for Presenting Engineering and Applied Knowledge (SPEAK) is a cross-college collaboration between faculty and students in the Department of Communication and the College of Engineering to bring the insight and expertise of world-class researchers and teachers in Communication to students in Engineering at a most teachable moment. Students involved in project-based and project-oriented classes across the College of Engineering participate in SPEAK just before they make the big project presentation for the semester. Communication Instructors run a clinic with the engineering students to review explicit example slides from the engineering students' own presentations, provide critical feedback and iterate. Peer review and group discussions provide an opportunity for students to learn while helping others. Pilot programs from the last two years have proven highly effective in quantifiably improving student outcomes.
